Mary Johnson Rockers & The Spark
…is it a name or a band? What you need to know is that these soulful folk-rock darlings of the North Carolina Triangle music scene deliver “great, roving Americana with pipes to spare” (The Pinhook, Durham, NC). Ranging from subtle twang with impeccable harmonies to driving rock rhythms full of late-night swagger, Mary Johnson Rockers and the Spark continue to draw in fans of indie, folk and country alike.
Mary, a Tennessee-raised preacher’s kid from a large and musical family, met Miriam nearly two decades ago on the Nantahala River and they bonded over their love of harmony-centric folk music; the two started singing together in coffee houses around their college campus in Greensboro, NC and have been performing together in various configurations ever since. After performing under Mary’s maiden name (Mary Johnson) for several years and with short-lived but popular Carrboro group Pawnshop Ruby, Mary and Miriam went on meet Jim Kremidas, FJ Ventre (Jon Shain Trio, Tom Maxwell, the Swang Brothers) and Robert Cantrell (Hobex, Tim Smith Band) and in 2009 the Spark was formed.
